A noção de fotografia documental cobre uma variedade de práticas, quase tantas como a própria ideia de fotografia, consequentemente difícil a sua definição. Nos últimos anos, a fotografia documental tem experiênciado novos desenvolvimentos, e a exposição de Taryn Simon (n.1975, EUA), na Photographer’s Gallery em Londres é um exemplo.
“An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar”, o último trabalho de Simon é o resultado de quatro anos de pesquisa de temas tão variados como a hibernação de ursos, aos centros de investigação de Marijuana, na América.

“The Innocents”, o trabalho anterior, testemunha a experiência de pessoas que erradamente foram condenadas à prisão. Linhas diferentes de documentário estão subjacentes nos dois trabalhos: em “The Innocents”, a denúncia de situações, o testemunho característico das reportagens fotográficas, em “An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar”, o testemunho actual da ciência, da política, da medicina, da natureza, da ficção nos media, da religião...enfim a fotografia como documento da cultura actual na América.

Simon explora, como Watkins e O’Sullivan exploraram na era das missões geológicas, na década de 1870, o território do novo mundo, o Oeste americano. O mundo Ocidental via então em fotografia, paisagens só anteriormente imaginadas.
Simon também imaginou, muitos dos locais que fotografou, “sabemos que são locais que existem”revela Simon, “sabemos que qualquer animal que entra no país é obrigado a um período de quarentena, não conhecemos o local, o espaço onde eles ficam, e o que imaginámos, revela-se depois, completamente diferente.” São estas suas experiências que Simon agora nos revela.

A utilização de uma câmara de grande formato, (sempre que pode) e os temas, ajudam a criar um mundo de ilusão. Á primeira vista as fotografias parecem irreais, tiradas a um mundo criado em maquetes, como faz Thomas Demand, Christoph Draeger, Edwin Zwakman....
